Coach Nurse
When you are learning the fundamentals you need a great teacher. Coach Nick Nurse has been around basketball for over 25-years as a college player, college coach, and professional coach.
Player
Nick is a native of Carroll, Iowa, where he led the 1985 Kuemper High School basketball team to the Big School State Championship. Along with his athletic skills on the basketball court, he also was an accomplished athlete in track, baseball, football – but basketball was and will always be his true love. A small town Iowan kid with big time dreams and aspirations!
His passion for hoops accompinied by his work ethic and drive to be the best he can be propelled Nick to become one of the best shooters the state of Iowa has ever seen. But Nick was not born with this abillity nor did it just come to him right away when he picked up a basketball. He spent countless hours in the gym working on his game putting in the time and dedication that it takes to be great. Nick knew that the keys to success were practice, repetition, and muscle memory plus the main ingrediant: shooting with the correct form. Practice makes perfect, but only with the correct form.
Through his relentless dedication and commitment to practicing with the perfect form, he earned a basketball scholarship to the University of Northern Iowa. When his college career was completed, Nick had graduated from UNI with a degree in accounting while achieving 7 school records in three point shooting. He still holds the unprecedented title of having the highest 3-point percentage in Division 1 in Iowa history.
Coach
After college Nurse crossed state lines and entered “dakota territory” where he commenced his coaching career as an Assistant for the University of South Dakota Men’s Basketball Team. Nurse helped lead the Coyotes to the national playoffs in the early 90′s, which still remains the greatest turn around in South Dakota’s history.
Nurse’s desire to gain head coaching experience and his drive to be the best coach he could led him across the Atlantic to Europe in 1996, where he remained for the next 11 years. During this time in Europe, Nurse achieved many coaching accomplishments which included winning 9 championships. He earned coach of the year in 2000 with the London Towers and again in 2004 with the Brighton Bears. Everywhere Nick went his teams won. He contributes this to his hard work ethic and dedication, the same as he used to use when he was becoming the best shooter in the state of Iowa. After his success overseas, Nick returned to the United States to become the head coach of the NBA Developmental League Iowa Energy. With the Energy, Nick obtained the records for: most wins in a season, best winning percentage all time by a NBA D-League coach, most consecutive All-Star Coaching appearances (3), and capped it all off with a Coach of the Year award in the 2010-2011 season along with leading the Iowa Energy to winning the 2010-2011 NBA D League Championship. On top of all that, Nurse is also the Assistant Coach for the Great Britian National Team which will be competing for Olympic Gold in the 2012 London Olympic Games.
During the 2008-2009 season, in only his second year, Nurse led the Energy to the NBDL Central Division Crown with a record of 28-22. He was choosen to represent the NBDL as the Head Coach of the Eastern Conference in the 2009 All-Star Game in Pheonix. Nurse helped developed Courtney Sims into the MVP of the NBA D League and Othyus Jeffers into the Rookie of the Year. He also had 5 all-league selections and 3 all-star nominations. As if that season wasn’t good enough, the following season proved to be even more fruitful! Nurse led the Energy to the best record in NBA D League history at an astonishing mark of 37-13, with an 18-7 road record (also an NBA D League record). He was again unanimously selected to represent the Eastern Conference as the coach of the NBA D League All-Star Game in Dallas. The Energy led the Central Division from game 1 of the season all the way to the end of the season. In the 2010-2011 season the Energy led the division since the 1st game of the season and have led the Central Division dating back to the 2008-2009 season for over an unprecidented 125 games. A mark that no other team has come close to matching. Nurse was once again selected to be the Head Coach for the Eastern Conference in the NBA D League All-Star Game where he lead the East to a victory. Nurse capped off a dream season by being selected as NBA D League Coach of the Year and leading the Iowa Energy to their first NBA D League Championship.
On September 19th, 2011 Nurse accepted the Head Coaching job for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA D League. Nurse will be the head coach of the Vipers for 2 seasons and then become an assistant coach for the Houston Rockets.
Throughout Nurse’s tenure as coach of the Iowa Energy he had 12 ten day call-ups for his players to the NBA. This is the most in the league by a wide margin. Some of these call-ups include successful NBA players such as NBA Champion Shannon Brown of the Los Angeles Lakers, Cartier Martin of the Washington Wizards, Anthony Toliver of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Othyus Jeffers of the Washington Wizards.
Nick has also personally coached and developed players under his tutelage and vast knowledge of how to teach the game of basketball and how to help players become the best shooters they possibly can be. Some of these notable players that Nurse has helped become great shooters is: Wes Johnson, 1st Team All-American at Syracuse and 2010 NBA Top 5 Draft Pick of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Curtis Stinson, one of Iowa State’s all-time great point guards, a 3-time NBA D League All-Star starting point guard, as well as the 2010-2011 NBA D League MVP. Harrison Barnes of North Carolina, the #1 recruit in the class of 2011 and the first freshmen ever selected as a Pre-Season 1st Team All-American, and the odds on favorite to be player of the year in 2011-2012. (ALL OF THESE PLAYERS USED THE PILL!!!)
As you can see, Nick’s success as a player and a coach was not just handed to him. He became the greatest 3 point shooter in Iowa history through hard work, dedication, and practice practice practice!! With the correct form! These qualities learned at a young age through shooting a basketball have stuck with Nick and helped him become the successful coach he is today and the NBA coach he will become in the future.
