Nick Nurse Bio
Iowa Male Athlete of the Year and 2 time Most Valuable Player at the University of Northern Iowa,
Nick Nurse, is a native of Carroll, Iowa. He attended Kuemper High School, where in 1985 he
led his team to the Big School State Championship in basketball.
In 1985, Nurse was named the Des Moines Register Male Athlete of the Year for his
accomplishments in fours sports. Leading Kuemper to their first ever State Football
berth as quarterback, went to state in track and field as a pole vaulter and went 20-0
as a high school pitcher, the team was ranked #1 in the state. He played in 4 different
High School All Star games including The Shrine Bowl, The Dr. Pepper Basketball All Star
Series, and The Iowa Coaches Baseball All-Star game.

Receiving a full ride scholarship to the University of Northern Iowa where he was a four
your starter, Nurse was twice named MVP. He left school holding 7 school records all
pertaining to 3 point shooting and is still the ALL-TIME leading 3 point % shooter in Division
I college basketball in the state of Iowa history. He graduated in 1990 with a degree in Accounting.
Nurse played one season professionally in Europe, where he averaged 24 points per game and shot 91% from the free throw line.
At the tender age of 23, he was named the Head Coach of Grand View College in Des Moines, becoming the youngest College Basketball
Coach in the United States. He took over a team that had won only 4 games the year previous and led them to the play-offs, winning
16 games during the second season. A 2 year stint at the University of South Dakota resulted in Nurse receiving a Master's Degree
and helped the Coyotes to a achieve a 46-14 record.
Nurse's desire to gain valuable Head Coaching experience and improve team performance led him back to Europe in 1996, where he
remained for the next 11 years. During this time, he achieved many Coaching accomplishments, and collected numerous awards.
Nurse has held Head Coaching positions in the UK British Basketball League (BBL), Italy, USBL, Belgium and the FILA LA Summer League.
During this time, his accomplishments included winning 9 championships in the BBL, 2 BBL Coach of the Year awards, 6 time
All Star Head Coach. He also spent the summer of 2000 as Assistant Coach to the Milwaukee Bucks Summer Pro Team.
Nurse continues to be an avid sports person as he completed the Prague Marathon and the London Triathlon. He also won the
Chicago Triathlon for his age group in 1995.
Nurse delivers a program on fitness and nutrition to adults and also tutors players from the pee wee's to the pro's on the finer
points of basketball. Nurse has conducted basketball camps for over 15 years both in the USA and Europe.
He is the author of the "The Ultimate Book of Shooting" and
created the "the Nurse's Pill", an instructional teaching
aide for better basketball shooting.
He resides in West Des Moines, Iowa.
